I plan on converting my Camaro to run on ethanol- has anyone ever heard of this being done to a Camaro before??

I have felt burdened by this car’s consumption and its negative effects on the environment so I feel like the best thing to do is convert it to ethanol. I hear that the benefits are great as well!!! Conserv Fuel will be my fueling station after the completion of the conversion.

I will be completing my research soon and hopefully be running E85 within a month from now. I will be posting more information on this Green Muscle Car Project in the coming weeks.

California Variance requirement for B99

For those of you wondering why Conserv Fuel pulled the biodiesel hoses off of three pumps at our station, the answer is the CA Department of Measurement Standards (DMS). According to California law, biodiesel is classified as a fuel additive and not a fuel unto itself. Biodiesel (B99.9/B100) is a clean burning renewable fuel, which since August 18, 2004 has been sold in California as a development fuel. Sales are restricted through the variance procedures to centrally fueled fleets, at controlled access fueling systems, through co-op organizations or to qualified members of biodiesel users groups.

The California Department of Measurements Standards (DMS) requires that all vendors of biodiesel and biodiesel blends apply through the variance procedure to receive authorization to sell non-specification fuels. This variance procedure will be in place until ASTM issues stand-alone fuel standards for B100 and/or B20 as fuels. Although biodiesel currently has an ASTM standard (D-6751), the standards title is “ Biodiesel Fuel (B100) Blend Stock for Distillate Fuels “. Without standards, which identify biodiesel as a fuel, special interest groups have been able to prevent the sale of B100 to the public and further require that biodiesel blends conform to petroleum distillate (D-975) standards. At this time California Business and Professional Code section 13450(a) requires that all diesel fuel sold in the state “shall meet the specifications set forth in ASTM D-975”

In short, if Conserv Fuel does not enforce this state variance requirement, DMS will shut down all of our B99 pumps. Unfortunately, California is the only state in the nation that requires that B99 customers be members of a users group. This variance is one of the biggest hurdles currently obstructing the availability of biodiesel throughout the state of California. We need to activate the biodisel community to write letters to their local representatives and the governor asking them to revoke this ridiculous state mandate.

As most of you know, Conserv Fuel began selling E85 in December of 2007. Jumping through all of the regulatory hoops was a massive undertaking which required a significant amount of both time and money. In spite of the obstacles we faced, our desire to bring alternative fuels to the mainstream motivated us to forge ahead and claim the position of the second E85 pump in the state of California.

Conserv Fuel hopes that by helping pave the way for our E85 pump, other stations will be encouraged to follow down our same path of making biofuels available to the general public. We would like for the customer to know that we realize that ethanol is a controversial fuel, yet we feel that it’s important that California motorists have access to it. We are trying to source our ethanol from the most sustainable source, yet being a brand new fuel is this state, our supply sources are very limited. Please realize that no fuel is perfect, especially not this first generation of biofuels, yet we believe that it represents a first and crucial step towards a better future.

My wife and I both run B99 in twenty year old Mercedes diesels. Her 240 D experiencing a small diminishing in torque, but with replacement of oil filter should clear up; my 300 D, no problems currently. We put in perhaps 250-300 miles/month each, so it isn’t much. My 300 D has very good torque.

No problems with oil filters or lines yet. We’re waiting. At first, we mixed petrodiesel with B99. Now we’re 100% B99 after a couple of fillings.

Feels great not to be spending money at the Big Oil Companies. Exxon made $40 billion last year, the most revenue of any company in history. They’ll use the money to dig deeper in the earth and at sea, but the era of biofuels and other alternatives is here, no turning back.

We need to get the word out. B99 and the others work. And, the good news, you’re putting out a fraction of the C02’s.

The second Biodiesel Community Conference will he held August 1, 2007 from 7pm to 10pm at Mt. Olive Church, 1343 Ocean Park Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90405.

Los Angeles, CA – (July 16, 2007) The Los Angeles Biodiesel Community Conference is open to the general public and will offer action-based discussions on Biodiesel Basics, Legislation, Local Distribution, School Bus and Other Fleet Usage, Biodiesel Education, and more.

The event is being sponsored by Southern California Disposal and Recycling, and will be hosted by The Los Angeles Biodiesel Working Group, the LA Biodiesel Co-op, Socalbug (the Southern California Biodiesel Users Group), and Josh Tickell, author of “From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank” and “Biodiesel America.”

The purpose of the conference is to empower and educate the public, local businesses and community leaders in their efforts to make biodiesel a viable fuel option for Southern California. Collectively we will establish a groundbreaking action plan that will provide the steps to expand biodiesel distribution in Southern California and establish new legislation that promotes sustainable fuel options.
We, as a community, can make biodiesel an affordable and available fuel option. It is time for us to unite and take action today! For more information, visit http://www.socalbug.org.
